Modern Rock Guitar Vol.101 to Vol.146

2007-2010 (current) ( & archive 1,2,3 pre 2000)

Denis began Recording his albums in1999 with the release of his debut album Modern Rock guitar vol.1 "Abducted by aliens" which was a conventional recording using overdubs and worked out parts. Denis used his rack setup consisting of a peavey tubefex guitar preamp and 50/50 tube amps. He played all the instruments himself. His next release in 2001, Modern Rock guitar vol. 2 "Alien Guitar" brought about drastic changes in his approach to recording after he discovers guitar loops done on the fly. From the second album on, All of Denis's albums are performed and recorded live without overdubs and all the racks are improvised on the spot. Albums were put out a year at a time including the live album Modern Rock guitar vol.4 "an evening with Denis Taaffe" where Denis had performed live with a small guitar setup consisting of 2 small amps (a crate solid state and a Marshall tube combo amp).  With Modern Rock Guitar vol.5 "2 Worlds" , which is a live double album, Denis begins using 2 combo amps and a digitech rp-50 instead of his rack system. For Modern Rock Guitar Vol.6 "Ice", Denis doesn't use bass emulation (imitating bass guitar on a regular electric guitar) and he only used one boomerang pedalboard instead of 2 which gives the album a distinct sound. He was still getting used to his new guitar setup consisting of 2 solid state combo amps and a digitech rp-50 instead of 2 racks). He also replaces his schecter/ibanez guitar he has played for20 years with a Parker guitar. This sets in motion a flurry of albums (from Modern Rock Guitar vol.7 "midnight" on) that  are recorded in a short amount of time. 10 albums were recorded in 2005, 75 in 2006, 20 in 2007 and 15 so far in 2008. With the release of Modern Rock guitar vol.24 "Go For It", Denis abandons drum machines in favor of drum samples (recorded drums played by real drummers). On the next album,  Modern Rock guitar Vol.25 "The Road Less traveled" , Denis begins experimenting with a Line 6 Pod xt live and the  digitech rp-50pedal and has replaced his digitech rp-50 with the line 6 pod xt live and 2 combo amps. Modern rock Guitar vol.98 "life in the new ice age"  brings on a Line 6 variax guitar which models many classic guitars, banjo and dobro. Denis use the line 6 and his parker for subsequent albums until modern Rock Guitar vol.101"At The Station". From that album on Denis reverts back to his normal Parker Guitar. During this time Denis adds some additional amp models to his line 6 pod xt live. He also adds a Fender Mexican start with a Seymour Duncan invader pickup which he uses on Modern rock Guitar Vol.118 "Cross Pollination" and on subsequent albums.. In the near future, Denis plans more changes after modern Rock guitar After Modern Rock Guitar Vol.127 "Superfortress"  including a switch to tube amps instead of solid state amps and recordings will be done on a mackie 32x8x2 mixing console which has raised the quality of Denis's album recordings. One thing that has remained constant is Denis's use of Roland Vs digital recorders  either Roland Vs880,Roland Vs880-ex or Roland Vs890 recorders.  However, Denis has been experimenting with a EMU emulator X and Sonar DAW recording system. Overall, Denis's albums shows how he has developed his approach to guitar , music and recording and helped to develop his own style in the process. Denis continues to record and release albums...
